South African telenovela, The River, has been announced as a nominee for the prestigious 2019 Emmy Awards, which are set to take place in Los Angeles, California.
Producer of the weekday drama, Bonga Percy Vilakazi, made the announcement by sharing a screenshot of an email which revealed the nominations list. The announcement stated that The River has been nominated in the category of Best Telenovela, alongside Argentina’s 100 Dias Para Enamorarse, Colombia’s La Reina del Flow and Portugal’s Vidas Opostas.
Industry peers immediately shared congratulatory messages on social media, with many praising the production team for the unique, yet relatable storylines. Actress, Thandy Matlaila, from Mzansi Magic’s The Queen shared a tweet which stated, “They believed they could, so they did! What a great time to be alive! Congratulations to the whole team from The River. Well deserved. Cast, crew, writers, fans, South Africa… you all did it!”. Nyeleti T Khoza, an actress from SABC 2’s Giyani – Land of Blood, also commented with, “Congratulations to the whole The River team. Truly deserving, from the broadcaster, 1 Magic, who obviously put up a great budget; to the crew who carry heavy equipment, to the actors who bring to life the wonderful writing skills. We are so proud!!”.
The River is a South African television series created by Phathu Makwarela and Gwydion Beynon and produced by Tshedza Pictures.
The Emmy Awards will be held at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, 22 September 2019. The live broadcast will be broadcast on FOX at 20:00.
