Three British shows based on American shows

Contrary to popular belief, there have been American shows that inspired British remakes, and below there are three of the most popular shows to have done this.

Ironically, one of the most popular narratives that is perpetuated is how the US has been inspired by British shows to create their own remakes. Examples include Shameless and Days Like These, a sitcom which is reportedly the inspiration behind That 70s Show.

But a less spoken fact is that the United Kingdom has also been guilty of adapting American shows and presenting them with a uniquely British lens in the past.

Some of the most notable American shows that have been the inspiration of British shows include America’s Next Top Model, The Apprentice, and The Golden Girls.

Why does British TV look different?

If you have watched British programming and thought to yourself, “Why does it look different from American programming”, you would have been right to ask that question, as its look and tonality is actually different.

However, the reason for this is the differences in standards and practices between the two leading television and film industries in the world.

As such, there is the understanding that the two industries have distinguished themselves through their distinctions in practice and standards. Therefore, it is understood that the two will never have the same look and tonality.

Where to watch The Brighton Belles

The Brighton Belles is a sitcom that is reportedly based on the American hit sitcom, The Golden Girls which ran for seven seasons between 1985 and 1992.

A year later, The Brighton Belles premiered on ITV. The Brighton Belles did not enjoy as long of a run as the original show did, with only two seasons between 1993 and 1994.

This is possibly due to how long ago the show had aired, and it is currently not available on any major streaming platform for fans to watch.
