Tiffany Barbuzano details creative process behind Still Breathing

Tiffany Barbuzano – actor, producer and creator of M-Net’s Still Breathing – has detailed the creative process of the show, ahead of the season finale tonight, 21 May 2020.

Tiffany Barbuzano, who plays Jess on Still Breathing, detailed her dual involvement as an actress and producer of the show, in an interview with JustNje today, 21 May 2020. The actress, who is the co-owner of BBZ Films alongside her SAFTA award-winning husband, Johnny Barbuzano, also created the critically-acclaimed series, which has garnered a mass audience on South African television.

Tiffany revealed that Still Breathing was developed as a cathartic outlet after losing her older sister. She explained that the series allowed her to deal with her grief, and was a way of developing a story around a group of people who have experienced a similar loss. The success of the show has also come as a pleasant surprise, as she was uncertain of how the show would be received because it highlights numerous social issues which are prevalent in South Africa.

She stated, “We were nervous of how the stories would be portrayed. It was not the typical viewpoint. People find it difficult to pass judgement, even though they know it’s happening.” Tiffany Barbuzano claimed that having Nollie as an alcoholic, and Danny viewed in a sympathetic way following his domestic violence, was done in a way for the audience to draw new conclusions on how they felt about these situations.

The season finale of Still Breathing airs tonight, 21 May 2020, on M-Net, DStv channel 101.
