Many have said that Childish Gambino, whose real name is Donald Glover, knowingly enjoys playing provocateur and as expected, the entertainer’s latest music video’s subliminal messaging has sparked social media conversation.
Childish Gambino’s latest animated music video ‘Feels Like Summer’ has sparked conversation on social media with fans and followers from around the global weighing in on its subliminal messaging. The music video figuratively depicts various influential black Americans and features animated characters such as Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Future to name a few.
The most controversial depiction that sparked conversation is the depiction of Michelle Obama and Kanye West. In that particular vignette, a teary-eyed Kanye west is seen wearing his Make America Great Again headwear and Michelle Obama comes into the frame to hug and wash away his tears.
“Michelle Obama is a strong mother figure for her children. Kanye West hasn’t been the same since his mother figure passed on. I believe this is just imagery used to describe Kanye’s need for a strong mother figure to be present and give him guidance,” said Twitter user @Platoduque.
Some have concluded that Michelle Obama is a representative of “centre-left politics.”
While Twitter users continue to debate and share their interpretation of the video, others do not see the need to invest so much into “just a cartoon” and have dismissed the video as attention-seeking.
Childish Gambino previously caused a similar stir with his previous video ‘This is America’ which depicted the harsh realities of the current state of America and society.
