Since the Mikaelsons are responsible for all the vampires in existence, they are also indirectly responsible for turning the Salvatore brothers; below we look at the family tree.
The Vampire Diaries ran for eight seasons, with the Mikaelson family playing the main antagonists against the Salvatore brothers.
However, as the Original family responsible for the creation of vampires, they are also indirectly connected to the Salvatore brothers turning into vampires.
Therefore, to establish the connection between the Salvatore brothers and Mikaelson family, we look at the family tree which resulted in Stefan Salvatore being the first of his family to turn into a vampire.
Later turning his brother, Damon Salvatore into a vampire and cursing the brothers to decades of rivalry until they reconciled.
What was The Vampire Diaries?
The Vampire Diaries first premiered on The CW in 2009. The series was based on the series of novels by American author Aubrey Clark of the same name.
However, Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson are credited for developing the series which would run for eight seasons before its conclusion in 2017.
The premise of the series followed, “The lives, loves, dangers and disasters in the town, Mystic Falls, Virginia. Creatures of unspeakable horror lurk beneath this town as a teenage girl is suddenly torn between two vampire brothers.”
Nina Dobrev played the title character of Elena Gilbert until season six, only to return for the series season finale.
Vampire Diaries: Salvatore-Mikaelson’s family tree explained
Due to the antagonistic relationship between the Mikaelsons and the Salvatore brothers in the series, the matter of all the vampire families being connected by blood to the Original family is often neglected.
This is as all vampires are creations extending from the first vampires. Since Esther was responsible for creating the first vampires, following the death of her youngest son, Henrik, at the “hands” of werewolves.
In order to protect the rest of her family, Esther decided to turn the rest of her sons Finn, Elijah, Niklaus, or Klaus and Kol.
Them being the first ever vampires in history, The Originals, makes them responsible for the creation of all the other vampires that came after them.
Therefore, the Salvatore brothers have Klaus to thank or blame, depending on how you look at it. This is as Klaus is responsible for turning Mary Porter into a vampire.
Klaus turns Mary Porter into a vampire
Mary “Scary Rose” Porter’s origin story started when Klaus turned her into a vampire.
This is particularly significant to the story, because Mary later turned Rose, before she was killed by Kol, in an attempt to stop Damon from finding out who was responsible for his vampire lineage.
However, Kol did not consider Rose in the equation, who was responsible for turning one of the biggest antagonists of the series, Katerina Petrova, also known as Katherine Pierce, who turned a 17-year-old Stefan Salvatore.
Rose turns Katerina Petrova into a vampire
Rose never intended to turn Katerina Petrova into a vampire. She was helping her best friend Trevor, who was also a vampire, keep Katerina safe while she was on the run from Klaus Mikaelson.
Klaus sought Katerina in order to break the spell that kept his werewolf abilities bound, abilities inherited from his real father, Ansel, the former Alpha of the North East Atlantic Pack.
Therefore, Katerina tricked Rose to get her blood and turn herself into a vampire. The move would prevent her from being used as the doppelganger sacrifice needed to break the spell that bound Klaus’ werewolf abilities.
It is Katerina that would turn the first of the Salvatore brothers, Stefan, into a vampire.
Stefan turns Damon into a vampire
The last of the chain link that bound the Mikaelson family with the Salvatore family was Stefan Salvatore, who was turned into a vampire in 1864 by Katerina Petrova’s blood.
Following turning into a vampire, Stefan forced his brother, Damon to turn into a vampire by making him feed on the blood of a woman in order to complete the transition from human to vampire.
The brothers would remain vampires and in a love triangle with Katerina until they met and fell in love with Elena Gilbert, who was distantly related to Katerina as they both share Petrova blood.
The Vampire Diaries ended with the Salvatore brothers transitioning back to being human. Stefan did so as a selfless act in order to save his brother and allow him to have a relationship with Elena Gilbert.
The sacrifice allowed Damon to also turn back to being human and live happily ever after with Elena.
The brothers’ death marked the end of the lineage of the Salvatore’s connection with the Mikaelson family. As Klaus turned Mary Porter, who turned Marie-Rose, who was responsible for Katerina’s transition, who turned Stefan.
