Viu has confirmed that this past week’s episodes of SABC 1’s Uzalo are currently available for viewing without the need for a subscription on the platform.
Viu took to Twitter on Monday, 13 September 2021, to affirm that the omnibus for this past week’s episodes of SABC 1’s Uzalo are available to view for free. The implication is that members of the public without a subscription on the paid subscription video on-demand streaming platform can watch the episodes without having to create an account or pay.
According to the shared description, Friday’s episode was “an emotional rollercoaster, as a beloved daughter, sister and friend bids their farewell to KwaMashu. Gabisile rebuilds with a struggling Hlelo and Nyawo’s wildest dreams become reality.”
The departure in question was that of Zekhethelo Mhlongo, played by Nyalleng Thibedi. Thibedi is set to mark her final goodbye to her role this week, as she concludes her relationship with Pastor Gwala, played by Menzi Biyela. Thibedi’s departure marks the end of a four-year stint of her playing the complex character.
The omnibus is available to view on Viu.

What is Viu South Africa?
Viu is a paid subscription video on-demand streaming platform which houses some of the leading soapies and telenovelas in South Africa. These include SABC 1’s Skeem Saam, Generations: The Legacy, Uzalo and similar format shows from SABC 2 like 7de Laan and e.tv’s Scandal!.
Is viewing on Viu free?
The company better explained the payment structure by stating that Viu “is a mix of free and premium content. You can download or stream all the free content and view it any time without subscription. The premium or paid downloaded content will be available to you only till the time you have a valid subscription.”
Is Viu legal?
Considering that the platform houses the biggest soapies and telenovelas currently on SABC and e.tv and that it has the endorsement of the channels, it is believed to be legal. This is a sentiment that was echoed by a statement which read, “Viu is a localized, legal digital platform providing online video content in the Asia-Pacific region (now including South Africa).”
