Wednesday: Can Wednesday see the future?

Wednesday Addams does have the ability to see into the future at times, as long as she touches a person or object that triggers the vision.

Wednesday is a new spin-off series that focuses on Wednesday Addams as she adjusts to life at boarding school.

In this series, Wednesday discovers that she has special powers in the form of psychic visions that allow her to see into the past and the future.

However, these powers do not come without a price and Wednesday must learn to control her visions to ensure they do not end up hurting her.

What is Wednesday all about?

The new spin-off series, Wednesday, which was released on Netflix on 23 November 2022 has already been receiving positive feedback from fans of the Addams Family franchise.

The franchise has been waiting a long time for  their favourite misfit child as the main focus of a film or series.

This Netflix original series follows Wednesday Addams, played by Jenna Ortega, as she learns to navigate life at Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for outcasts.

Of course, once Wednesday arrives at Nevermore, she quickly figures out that her signature gothic style, cutting wit, and deadpan sensibilities are not the only things that are making it difficult for her to make new friends.

So far, fans have responded well to Tim Burton’s fresh and witty take on the character and on the fact that the original Wednesday Addams, Christina Ricci, also makes an appearance in the show.

Wednesday: Can Wednesday see the future?

Another feature of this new series that stands out from other places that Wednesday has featured in the Addams Family-franchise is the fact that Wednesday has special powers.

Wednesday does reveal in a voiceover that her powers have not been with her for a long time when the show starts, and this becomes more evident throughout the first season as she struggles to understand and control her powers.

Wednesday’s powers include psychic visions into the past and the future when she touches something that triggers the visions.

When these visions first start, Wednesday is able to see great details in her visions, make out faces, and listen in on dialogue.

But as her powers grow stronger, as Morticia warned her that they would, she is transported into the vision and can even interact with the world around her.

Although Wednesday’s hereditary ability to see the past and the future helps her significantly when she is investigating the mysteries that she uncovers at Nevermore, she discovers throughout the season that these powers can also end up harming her in the end.

Where do Wednesday’s powers come from?

Supernatural occurrences like special powers are not unusual in the Addams Family franchise.

In fact, the 1960s version of Morticia could emit smoke from her body and Uncle Fester has had powers ranging from immortality to electricity production over the years. Not to mention whatever powers allow Thing to operate as a disembodied-but-sentient hand.

However, in episode five of Wednesday, it is explained that in this instance, Wednesday’s powers are hereditary and that Morticia has similar powers.

However, with Morticia’s more positive disposition, she is considered to be a Dove, whereas Wednesday’s macabre outlook makes her a Raven.

It is also important to note that touching objects or people is what triggers Wednesday’s visions and that she cannot just see into the future whenever and wherever she pleases.

Why does Wednesday struggle to control her powers?

After Morticia explains her own powers to Wednesday, she also warns her that she will have to learn to control her powers or risk losing her mind.

Wednesday’s lack of control becomes more evident as the first season of the show progresses and as her visions go from being a hazy dream, to a full-body experience that transports her consciousness to another time and space, while her body is left behind – incapacitated and vulnerable.

However, Goody Addams, who is an ancestor, cannot reach out and help guide Wednesday in how to control her powers until she is willing to admit that she needs the help, and this is why she struggles at first.

What are the drawbacks of Wednesday’s visions?

Aside from the fact that her mother warns her about what can happen if she does not learn to control her powers, Wednesday also learns by the final episode of the season that she cannot solely rely on her visions, as they are unpredictable and may misrepresent the truth.

Principal Weems warned her about this, but it is clear that Wednesday only understood the gravity of this statement after her visions led her down an incorrect path and almost led to her losing her friends.
