Still Breathing is an M-Net original drama series which garnered major attention in early 2020 for its unique storyline and production value.
Still Breathing is a drama series created by BBZ Films, which aired on M-Net in the first half of 2020. The emotional show follows a group of old friends who had drifted apart during their adult years, only to be brought back together when one of the friends, Trent, is tragically killed in a car accident. Trent’s death brings about old secrets and lies that have riddled the friendship for years, and now threatens to permanently damage their relationships forever.
The 13-part series ended with Jess finding out that Trent and her best friend, Candice, had a love-child many years ago named Mathew. As the audience gets to know Mathew, it is discovered that he is not who he claims to be, and was posing as their child so that he could get a sense of family. Once the family’s patriarch finds out the truth, Mathew indirectly assists in his death to ensure his secret is kept safe.
Fans were deeply moved by the creative story that managed to incorporate subject matters such as mental health, grief and betrayal. The season also challenged stereotypical roles of men and women, which sparked much conversation on social media after each episode. Many have pleaded for a second season of Still Breathing, however, BBZ Films and M-Net have yet to confirm the continuation of the show.
In an interview with JustNje in May 2020, writer, creator and lead actress, Tiffany Barbuzano explained that, at the time, they had not been commissioned to start developing season two of the show, however, they remain hopeful that M-Net will give them the go-ahead for 2021. She explained that having a season finale with such a cliffhanger gave them an opportunity to continue with the show, however, with the COVID-19 pandemic, it is difficult to make concrete plans.
