Season 4 of GLOW would most likely have focused on Debbie and Bash’s new wrestling TV Network but would also feature all of the other characters’ individual stories.
Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (GLOW) cancellation ahead of its fourth season was more chaotic than that of most shows and featured a reversed renewal and production delays.
However, if the show continued as planned, it is likely that the fourth season would have focused on Debbie’s new TV Network. It also may even have ended with all the women in different places.
Why was GLOW cancelled?
It is always disappointing when one of your favourite shows gets cancelled before the story had a chance to play out, but what is even worse is when your favourite show gets cancelled after it was renewed for another season.
Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened to the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling series in October 2020, when Netflix reversed the decision to renew the show for its fourth season.
In the end, the COVID-19 pandemic was to blame for the end of GLOW, since the filming restrictions imposed as a result of the pandemic caused a total shutdown in the show’s production.
What was going to happen in GLOW season 4?
It was incredibly unfortunate that GLOW was cancelled before its fourth season., This was set to be the show’s final season, which would have tied up all the loose ends from the previous seasons of the show, but this does not mean that all hope is lost.
Since GLOW was renewed shortly after the third season of the show started airing, the now-cancelled fourth season had already begun filming when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out.
While this may make the sting of the show’s untimely cancellation a little worse for most fans, it does mean that there was a clear plan in place for the final season’s narrative.
The third season of the show ended with Debbie going behind JJ’s back to buy a TV Network with Bash and Ruth rejecting the offer she got to direct her new show.
Liz Flahive, the co-creator of the series, has reiterated that they never wanted the story to move backwards.
As a result, it is safe to say that the fourth season of the show would most likely have seen Debbie and Bash working together to get this new wrestling show off the ground, with all new characters and stories.
Ruth, on the other hand, would likely have faced some new challenges when she tried to go back home.
Which GLOW cast members would have returned for season 4?
It was already confirmed that many members of the main cast would be reprising their roles in the fourth season of GLOW before it was cancelled.
This includes Marc Maron, who was set to return as Sam Sylvia, the GLOW director, and Kate Nash, who played Rhonda.
Fans were also certain that they would see Betty Gilpin as Debbie, Britt Baron as Justine, Chris Lowell as Bash, Sydelle Noel as Cherry, and Alison Brie as Ruth in the fourth and final season of the series.
Would Ruth have moved back home in season 4?
At the end of the third season, Ruth declined Debbie’s offer for her to direct a new wrestling program, despite the fact that she had been turned down for the role in Sam’s next movie in favour of going back home.
However, Carly Mensch, who is the co-showrunner of GLOW said in an interview that they were excited to explore the questions, “can you go home again?” and “can you never go home again?” in the fourth season.
This seems to indicate that Ruth may have faced some conflict that would have made her question her decision to decline Debbie’s offer in the fourth season.
Theories for how GLOW would have ended
From what Debbie told Ruth before Ruth rejected her offer, Debbie and Bash would have had their hands full in the beginning of the fourth season of the show creating a new wrestling show, with all-new characters.
Especially since they could not use the GLOW characters and shows on their new TV Network for legal reasons.
However, as Carly Mensch said, “a lot of the women at the end of season three don’t even know the potential opportunities ahead.”
Moreover, with many of the women wrapped up in their own stories, there are many different ways that the show could have ended.
At the end of season three, Carmen left GLOW, Sheila had new-found confidence, and Keith and Cherry were planning to start a family.
After all of this, it is entirely possible that season four could have ended with all of these characters off on their own journeys.
