In season 2 of The Society, the central themes of the first season, a new outpost, and some of the unanswered questions would have been explored.
The first season of The Society proved was fairly successful and started developing the story of a group of teenagers who returned to their home town after a camping trip to find that all of the town’s adults disappeared.
Unfortunately, Netflix decided not to renew the show for a second season. However, the show’s creators have confirmed that the second season would have developed the mystery further, established a new outpost, and answered some burning questions.
About the first season of The Society
Netflix’s original series, The Society, first debuted on 10 May 2019. The show was created by Christopher Keyser who is best known for his award-winning work on Party of Five.
The show’s first season had ten episodes and was praised for being a modern young-adult adaption of Lord of the Flies.
The story follows a group of teenagers who return home to find that all the adults of their town have vanished mysteriously. As such, they are left to figure what happened to them.
The Society was fairly popular with audiences after the release of this first season.
What was going to happen in The Society season 2?
Even though The Society’s first season had a pretty successful release, earning a 7.1 score on IMDb, an 86 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a user score of 6.5 on Metacritic, Netflix announced that the show would not be renewed for a second season.
There are many reasons why popular shows get cancelled, and Netflix has explained that they decided not to continue with the show because of circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the creator of the show, Christopher Keyser, has come out to say that by the time he was informed about Netflix’s decision not to move forward with the show, the second season’s scripts had already been written.
Although this turned out to be a lot of wasted effort, it does mean that if Netflix or any other studio does decide to pick up the show in the future, everything will be ready to go and fans of the show can still get some closure as to what was going to happen in season two.
Some of the highlights from Keyser’s planning include the fact that this season would have provided more clues about how the group got into the alternate reality, how they can get the town back to normal, a new outpost on the outskirts of the town, and answers to some of the unanswered questions from the first season.
How the main plot of the show would have continued
In the first season of The Society, the central conflict was how the group got to the alternate reality.
However, by the end of the first season, the group finally realised that they were the ones who disappeared to an alternate universe, and that everyone back in West Ham were probably looking for them.
The second season of the show would probably have expanded on this idea and would have had Gordie and Bean doing research to try and figure out how to return home.
All about the outpost
Keyser has confirmed that the group would have figured that they can farm on a spot just outside New Ham, which would have led them to create an outpost of sorts in this spot.
However, this newfound resource would then expectedly also give way to new power struggles in the group.
As a result, the second season would have had a more political theme and a heightened struggle for power and control between the town and the outpost.
Other unanswered questions from the first season of The Society
As with most shows, season one of The Society seemingly left its fans with more questions than answers.
Beyond the core questions of the group of how they were transported to this alternate reality and how they would find their way back, there are also other, less important unanswered questions.
Possibly at the top of this list is how the power struggle between Campbell, Harry, and Lexie, who had taken control of the town would transpire in the second season.
Many fans would also have liked to see if Grizz and Sam’s relationship would have lasted throughout the various power struggles and political interests at play.
Similarly, it was revealed that Elle tried to poison Campbell with pumpkin pie, but since this did not go to plan, fans were worried that he would become even more abusive towards her in the second season.
