Why did Alex leave Grey’s Anatomy?

Long-running medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy, left viewers shocked to find out that the last remaining original cast member, besides the lead character, had exited the show without any warning.

After 16 seasons and 15 years of portraying the snarky, yet sensitive, Dr Alex Karev, Justin Chambers decided it was time to bid farewell to the long-running character.

This saw the character leaving Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, as the last of the first five interns to begin at Seattle Grace Hospital.

Alex’s exit came as arguably the biggest surprise of the 16-season run, as creator, Shonda Rhimes, had decided he would be reunited with his long-lost love, Isabell Stevens, despite being married to Jo.

Viewers were left confused when Chambers unexpectedly left the show, as producers decided that his last episode would end with a voiceover.

In a public statement, Chambers stated, “There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years.

For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time.”
