Why did Chevy Chase leave Community?

The six- season American sitcom Community, saw one of the show leads, Chevy Chase, exiting the series after a feud with creator, Dan Harmon.

Veteran actor, Chevy Chase, became a fan favourite on the popular sitcom, Community, during his three-and-a-half-year stint.

The actor played Pierce Hawthorne, a bored millionaire who often offered his unsolicited opinions to the community members. Chase’s exit came abruptly in 2012, after he engaged in an onset argument with the show’s creator, Dan Harmon.

Known to share his distaste for the series in multiple interviews, Chase had previously stated that the television series was a step-down for him career-wise, as he had already successfully broken into the film industry.

In a 2013 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Harmon commented on the actor’s exit from the show, recounting a specific incident on set which fuelled their feud.

He stated, “[Chevy is] a befuddled old man, but he’s also the guy who calls you to his trailer and shakes the script in the air and says: ‘I’m not a befuddled old man! I’m sexy! I could be the star of this show! I’m not gay. You’re writing me as if I’m gay’, I’d say to him, ‘Do you understand that what you’re saying is funny and it makes an interesting character?’ He would kind of blink and stare at me and go, ‘Whatever, I just don’t think it’s funny’.”

Their conflicting views on the character, Pierce Hawthrone, ultimately led to the demise of their relationship and Chase’s exit from Community in 2012.
