Dr Mnqobi Mchunu, played by Fanele Zulu, exited the Durban Gen storyline in January 2021, after his character was shot during a hostage situation orchestrated by Ringo.
Dr Mnqobi Mchunu, played by Fanele Zulu, quickly grew to become a fan-favourite on eTV’s medical drama series, Durban Gen. The character was known as an eager intern who was excited to embark on his medical career at the prestigious KwaZulu-Natal-based hospital. Fans were shocked to learn that after almost three months on air, the show would see the death of one of the leading characters in one of the major plot twists of the first season.
Dr Mnqobi Mchunu was killed off the Durban Gen storyline in January 2021, following a fatal shooting by Ringo, who held the entire hospital hostage. The character was shot by Ringo whilst trying to protect Dr Zulu’s daughter, Lwandle, leading to him being honoured as a hero at the hospital.
The character’s death occurred due to the writers’ intention to add an emotional element to the storyline and was not due to any dispute between the production house, Stained Glass TV, and the actor. Fanele graciously departed from the series and was thankful for his time on the show.
