Nina Dobrev bid farewell to her lead role on The Vampire Diaries during season six of the hit show, claiming that she had always intended for her character to be on a six-season adventure.
Nina Dobrev portrayed the lead character of Elena Gilbert in The CW’s The Vampire Diaries.
At the end of season six, fans were shocked to learn of Nina’s departure from the show, as they did not understand how the main character would be able to be written out of the storyline.
The Vampire Diaries managed to keep Elena part of the last two seasons, with her being put into an indefinite sleep in a coffin.
The storyline then centred around her being kept safe whilst in a sleeping coma, which proved to be intriguing for viewers.
For the season finale of The Vampire Diaries, Nina returned to provide closure for fans of her character, as she was woken up from the coffin and managed to finally get a happy ending with her love, Damon.
Her statement announcing her departure in 2015 stated, “I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six-season adventure, and within those six years, I got the journey of a lifetime… As I move on to the next chapter of my life, I want to share this goodbye with all of you.”
