Chicago Fire fan favourite, Brian “Otis” Zvonecek, was reportedly killed off to remind audience members of the danger that comes with being a firefighter.
Season eight of the NBC hit show, Chicago Fire, saw fans shocked to find out that the beloved character, firefighter Brian “Otis” Zvonecek, played by Yuriy Sardarov, had succumbed to his injuries from the mattress fire. The season seven finale saw a mattress factory burning down, causing for Otis to risk his life to save those who were trapped inside. Season eight picked up as Otis was left gravely injured, ultimately leading to his death.
In an interview with TV Insider, the Chicago Fire creator, Derek Haas, explained that although the choice to kill off Otis was difficult, it was necessary. He stated, “We had pulled the football too many times when a person was in danger, then was saved. The audience has to be reminded that these calls are dangerous and sometimes people don’t make it. We thought, what if we killed off Otis and he dies heroically? We realized there was so much emotional landscape we could cover.”
Haas also explained that Sardarov graciously accepted the decision to end his character’s life, claiming that he understood the creative direction the show wanted to take.
