Why did Qhabanga leave Uzalo?

Siyabonga Shibe bid farewell to his character, Qhabanga, in the season six finale of SABC 1’s Uzalo, after he decided to leave the show and pursue new opportunities.

Siyabonga Shibe delivered his final performance on SABC 1’s Uzalo in the season six finale, which aired on Friday, 5 March 2021. The actor, who played the role of Qhabanga, exited the storyline by deciding to leave town and not return, as he was struggling to come to terms with the fact that he had killed Gabisile. Qhabanga managed to sell the church and relieve himself of all his duties as a pastor, which left his congregation extremely angry. With Qhabanga choosing to leave town and his character not being killed, fans remain hopeful that he may make a comeback in the future.

Siyabonga shared an Instagram post on Friday, following the airing of his last episode, where he thanked the cast and crew for being a part of his journey on the show. He stated, “A new great journey is ahead of me as a storyteller. I would also like to thank the crew, management, my fellow actors and everyone involved, mostly the viewers. I would like to say adios. I wish you all the best!!! Lastly, I would like to thank me for portraying the role of Qhabanga.”

In a statement issued to JustNje in October 2020, production house, Stained Glass TV, stated that Siyabonga, along with his on-screen partner, Baby Cele, would be leaving the show at the end of season six. The production company stated, “Baby Cele and Siyabonga Shibe will indeed be leaving the show by the end of season six of Uzalo. The story has taken this direction and will give us a riveting, high-stakes ending for both characters. The decision was made in consultation with the two actors. Both have given a tremendous amount to their roles on Uzalo and we are forever grateful for that.”
