Gugudan disbanded after four years together, following the ensemble’s rise in popularity; however, there was no formal reason provided by the group members for the separation.
Gugudan was a popular k-pop all-girl group that consisted of nine members initially. Following news of the group’s disbandment, new reports have suggested that the group was “together” for four years. However, just before the separation, the group had not released any new music or worked together.
Between 2016 and 2018, the group is believed to have experienced the height of its popularity, as it gained more prominence in the k-pop space. Their breakthrough single in the music industry was Wonderland, an upbeat mermaid-themed single. The group also released two EPs and two albums during that period, before their silence.
At the start of the new year, the group’s management issued a statement, which read, “This is Jellyfish Entertainment. First of all, we’d like to thank the fans for loving and supporting Gugudan. We would like to give you our official position regarding their group activities. All the members of Gugudan have been working hard and receiving a lot of love since their debut, but after a long and in-depth discussion, we have decided they will officially end their group activities on December 31st 2020.
‘Although their group activities are over, we will do our best to provide full support for their individual activities, such as music and acting. Thank you once again for your great support, and we sincerely apologise for the sudden news to the fans who love Gugudan. Lastly, please continue to show warm love and interest to the members who are about to make a fresh start. Thank you.”
The statement and the continued silence from the group on the reason for their split has sparked speculation that the management team was the real reason for the split, and not group dynamics.
