Why is Anna Faris leaving Mom?

Anna Faris has appeared as the lead character on CBS’ Mom since 2013, and has officially decided to leave the show after seven seasons of portraying Christy Plunket.

Anna Faris announced her departure from the hit CBS series, Mom, in September 2020, claiming that it was time for her to explore other opportunities. According to media reports, Anna stated, “The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career. While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”

The actress portrayed the recovering alcoholic and young mother, Christy Plunket, who goes through her late thirties in sobriety, whilst her mother, Bonnie, also goes through a similar experience. The news of her departure has left fans confused and worried about the show’s continuation, as Christy formed an integral part of the storyline.

In an interview with TVLine in October 2020, series co-creator, Gemma Baker, assured viewers that season eight will continue as scheduled, with Allison Janney, who plays Bonnie, being positioned as the lead. She also confirmed that Christy’s exit was based on the actress’s desire to grow her career in other areas, adding that the character will get the positive send-off that viewers have been hoping for.
