Why Lexie got killed off Grey’s Anatomy

Fans were heartbroken when the plane crashed and claimed the life of fan-favourite, Lexie Grey, as no one was ready to say goodbye to her.

Alexandra Caroline Grey, played by Chyler Leigh, is a fictional character from the medical drama series, Greys Anatomy. Alexandra, also known as Lexie, was the daughter of Thatcher and Susan Grey, and Meredith Grey’s half-sister. She started as an intern in season three of the show. She later became a surgical resident at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital, until she died in a plane crash. Following her death, the hospital was renamed after her and Mark Sloan, the two fatalities from the plane crash.

It was entirely Chyler who decided it was time for her to move on from the show. The actress revealed to TV Line in 2012 that she told creator, Shonda Rhimes that she wanted season eight of the series to be her last.

On 27 February 2017, Leigh admitted to Entertainment Weekly that she has not watched Greys Anatomy since Lexi died. She stated, “I felt like they did justice to the story in the way that it ended. It was that – not Romeo and Juliet – but it was that heartbreak and that moment of surrender, I guess, in letting Lexi die. I mean, I cried for hours after we had finished filming, just letting it go. It is letting go a part of yourself, but I think it was handled really well. I thought it was a beautiful way to go.”

Chyler did not give an official reason for leaving the show. After her departure, she went on a summer hiatus where she spent more time with her husband, Nathan West, and their three children. On 1 April 2021, Lexi made a guest appearance on the latest season of Greys Anatomy. Fans witnessed Lexi and Mark visiting Meredith at her magical “beach,” a limbo-like place where Meredith passes time as she drifts in and out of consciousness while battling COVID-19.

Lexie and Mark told Meredith to stop dragging her feet and start recognizing the gift of being alive. This was a necessary wake up call for Meredith, as she realized that she wanted to keep on fighting against the deadly virus. After her exit from Greys Anatomy, Leigh took on a role in the American superhero series, Supergirl, where she portrays Alex Danvers. Danvers also features in other DC Comics television series, including Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.
