Why Makhadzi’s debut Malawi performance was ruined by cyberbullies

Makhadzi’s celebratory and debut performance in Malawi was tarnished following a cyberbullying incident, as an image of the discoloration of her inner thighs was circulated.

Makhadzi took to Instagram on Sunday, 3 October 2021, to share a clip from her debut performance in Malawi. The celebrated South African artist was performing as part of the opening day performances for the three-day Sand Music Festival, which was carried out at the Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi District. Makhadzi, despite never having travelled to Malawi, was received with a capacity crowd to watch her one-hour performance.

Her last social media post, ahead of the experience being tainted by cyberbullies, was of her affirming her intention to go back to Malawi. The video showcased the mural which was painted of her. Moreover, the video audibly showcased the capacity crowd screaming Makhadzi’s name. However, the milestone for the musician was tarnished after a social media user circulated images of her discoloured inner thighs, where they suggested that she is dirty.

The unfounded assertions resulted in backlash, as women expressed how the discoloration of the inner thighs is normal. Moreover, Twitter users worked and eventually got the Twitter account disabled.
