Wits shares graduation of Miss SA, Shudufhadzo Musida

Wits shared the graduation ceremony of reigning Miss South Africa, Shudufhadzo Musida, which was met with backlash due to the alleged preferential treatment she received.

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) took to Twitter on Tuesday, 20 July 2021, to confirm that reigning Miss South Africa (SA), Shudufhadzo Musida, has graduated. According to the accompanying newsletter, “The reigning Miss South Africa, Shudufhadzo Musida also graduates with an honours degree in International Relations. She is outspoken on issues related to mental health and gender-based harm in society, amongst others.”

Moreover, the university shared a video of the pageant queen getting the opportunity to walk across the stage to receive her certificate. The video sparked outrage, as it was believed that she received preferential treatment due to her title. Some highlighted that other students did not get the same opportunity because of the current lockdown restrictions.

In light of the allegations and backlash, neither the institution nor Miss SA have responded. This could be due to the fact that the post was meant to highlight that, “A total of 6 712 students will graduate this July.” The manner in which the said graduations would be conducted was not detailed, therefore, it is unclear whether Musida was the only graduate to walk across the stage.
