Zakwe teams up with Stogie T and Jay Claude on his latest single Roots

Rapper Zakwe has collaborated with legendary hip-hop artist Stogie T and vocalist Jay Claude on Roots from his critically acclaimed 2018 studio album Cebisa.

Durban rapper Zakwe is still promoting his July 2018 twenty-track album Cebisa with the release of track nine from the album, Roots. The song features Stogie T, who walked away with two awards at the 2018 South African Hip Hop Awards for Best Lyricist and Best Mixtape of the Year, as well as Jay Claude.

The single was produced by Mzwandile Ngwenya of popular record label Mabala Noise Music. Each artist is credited for penning their respective verses.

The song plays on the concept of the word ‘roots’ and its meaning, from narratives about the artists’ lives to the socio-political status quo. Stogie T details his heritage, where he comes from and who he is now, against the backdrop of the changing political climate throughout the years. Zakwe does the same thing, but uses the changes in the township he grew up in as his backdrop. Jay Claude links the personal narratives through the chorus and hook.

Roots is the third single from the album following the release of Sebentin (Remix) featuring Kwesta, Blaklez, Cassper Nyovest and the now late hip-hop artists HHP and Pro, as well as Daai Deng alongside Ma-E.

The single is available for purchase on iTunes.
