Zendaya has been unveiled as the cover star for the fiftieth anniversary edition of Essence magazine, with the star recreating various looks in honour of the late Donyale Luna.
Zendaya, on Wednesday, 18 November 2020, took to Instagram to confirm that she is the cover star for the fiftieth anniversary edition of popular magazine, Essence. The Euphoria lead actress made the announcement by sharing the digital cover.
Through her caption to the post, the significance of the cover was revealed. To celebrate the milestone, Zendaya and the Essence team chose to honour Peggy Anne Donyale Aragonea Peugot Luna, commonly known as Donyale Luna, who is regarded as the first Black supermodel.
In subsequent images shared on Instagram, Zendaya showcased how she and the Essence team managed to recreate some of Donyale’s most iconic looks. Zendaya has been celebrated for being amongst the youth that has used its platforms to encourage change and speak to the racial injustices in the United States, which has been further emphasised by the cover feature.
