Zodwa Wabantu laughs off unlawful arrest

Zodwa Wabantu laughed off her unlawful arrest, which she alleges was done in order to cause her public embarrassment for not paying a bribe.

Zodwa Wabantu took to Instagram on Monday, 9 August 2021, to share a video of her time at a police station. In the early hours of that day, Wabantu was arrested for allegedly breaking curfew regulations. The video shared at the time was from a live session which showcased a temperamental Wabantu being antagonistic to the officers that were conducting her arrest.

Wabantu, recognising that she was being recorded, did so with her own camera. During her arrest, she was with her manager. The manager was the voice of reason during the incident, as Wabantu and the South African Police Service (SAPS) engaged in a heated back-and-forth.

When she was eventually released, Wabantu explained the context of her arrest. First, she claimed that she had a permit to be on the road after curfew. Moreover, Wabantu alleged that her arrest was as a result of not agreeing to pay a bribe to the SAPS officer. Therefore, the arrest was allegedly an attempt to tarnish her reputation.
