Zola 7 implicates Basetsana Kumalo in alleged IP infringement saga

Zola 7, during his tell-all interview with MacG on Podcast And Chill, implicated former beauty queen and television executive, Basetsana Kumalo, in an alleged IP infringement saga involving uTatakho.

MacGyver “MacG” Mukwevho took to Twitter on Thursday, 6 May 2021, to confirm that his interview with legendary South African entertainer, Bonginkosi “Zola 7” Dlamini, is available on YouTube. The interview was significant as it is the first local podcast interview to have a cinema debut, which was on Friday, 30 April 2021. Therefore, the subsequent release on YouTube was to provide viewers without access to screening venues the opportunity to watch the interview.

One of the telling moments from the interview was when Zola 7 detailed his reason for leaving Mzansi Magic’s flagship reality show, uTatakho. Zola 7, who was the initial host of the show, claimed to have received a call from someone alleging to have conceptualised the show and its premise. Further, the caller alleged that he was not rightfully credited by the production house behind the reality show, Connect TV.

The production house is co-owned by Basetsana Kumalo, who Zola 7 claims to have alerted about the matter. However, she allegedly failed to act on it. Moreover, Zola 7 alleged that an employee of the production house explained to him that once contracted to Connect TV, any ideas and intellectual property (IP) shared within the team during the term belongs to the company.
